About Me

Hello! My name's Em Flint. I'm a Registered Somatic Movement Therapist who took the scenic route to this work, and love bringing it into everyday spaces.

My career spans 30 years of public service including police, NHS, NSPCC, mental health and neurodiversity services, public engagement, and research. I've worked in "coal face" roles where I've walked alongside people living through just about every kind of crisis, and at a strategic level managing and designing services. I've also had the joy of helping people find hope and possibility through recovery, peer support, community engagement work, and lived experience involvement.

Two other threads run alongside these: a history of compound trauma, and a joyful fascination with how humans create meaning. On a lifelong quest to balance the demands of work with my own lived experience, I first encountered somatic therapy in 2014. For me, it helped where other interventions hadn't. Rather than pushing my experience only through cognition and language, somatic work opened a wide and a validating space to slowly feel, express, and integrate the wordless pains, joys, and simple feeling tones of life. I also appreciated the balance of factual knowledge (anatomy, development, and physiology) with the awe and mystery of sensing, moving, relating, creating... finding meaning. I found a steady, quiet awareness, and far greater adaptability, than I once dared hope for myself.

The work changed my life for a second time when I entered training with IBMT (Institute for Integrative Bodywork and Movement Therapy) in 2019, achieving full 500 hour diploma in 2025, and finally Registered Somatic Movement Therapist with ISMETA. I am trained in principles of Authentic Movement, Somatic Psychology, Embodied Anatomy and Physiology, and Infant Movement Development, and am assisting on the 2026-2029 diploma cycle.

I now specialise in somatic approaches to stress and burnout, trauma (including vicarious trauma in the workplace), and neurodivergence. A recent NIHR fellowship through University College London explored public engagement in research through a somatic lens, focussing on peer-supported somatic education for autistic adults. Peer Support work is a key thread too, where I've held roles from assistant support worker through to service lead, and still volunteer as a group facilitator. Like somatics, peer support values the knowledge of embodied, direct experience.

I hold diplomas in massage and bodywork, group facilitation, supervision, a BA (Hons) in Communication Studies (with Linguistics), clear enhanced DBS check, basic first aid certificate, and public liability insurance.

You can find my CV on LinkedIn here. And while it's important that you can trust my qualifications, you might also like to know that I love cinema, craft, a good belly laugh and a chance to dance!

Thanks for reading. I look forward to crossing paths with you.
